What is Wellness Care? Wellness care (also known as preventative care) is providing routine and regular medical care for your pet to ensure that the animal is in healthy condition and remains so. Ensuring your pet has a long and healthy life is an important goal for the doctors and staff of Encina Veterinary Hospital. To achieve this goal, pets require regular examinations along with timely blood and urine testing. This helps us keep your pet healthy and allows us to spot any signs of discomfort or illness early on.
Our doctors recommend that regular and comprehensive physical examinations be performed once or twice per year, depending on your pet’s age and needs. Thorough examinations allow the doctors to assess your pet’s entire body and to look for any changes that may be troublesome. During every examination, your veterinarian will assess your pet’s head (ears, eyes, mouth, etc), cardiovascular system, bones, muscles, and internal organs. This is done with the help of a combination of instruments such as otoscopes (to examine ears and eyes) a stethoscope (to listen to the heart), hands-on palpation of internal organs, and an overall visual examination of the skin and other body parts.
A key part in the wellness care examination is the questions your veterinarian will ask you. This medical and behavioral history helps our doctors understand how your pet is feeling, how he or she interacts with you at home and what your pets’ “normal” behavior is. This aids the doctors when making suggestions regarding diet, behavior, and medications. Please be sure to ask any questions and raise any concerns regarding your pet during the wellness history and examination.
In addition to periodic examinations, the doctors at Encina Veterinary Hospital recommend routine vaccinations. Some vaccines are given yearly, while others are spaced out at longer intervals. The doctors will help design an individual vaccine protocol suited to your pets’ needs.
Laboratory tests not only screen for diseases (intestinal parasites, heartworm disease, Lyme disease, feline leukemia and FIV) but also for the overall health of the blood and urine. Diseases are easily carried by mosquitoes and ticks and can pose a serious threat to our pets; we offer comprehensive panels which screen for several different diseases and parasites. Our veterinarians suggest this comprehensive disease check at least once every one to two years to ensure your pet’s overall health.
Heartworm preventative and flea/tick control of overall wellness care. Our veterinarians can help identify the best method of flea control for your pets. Year round flea and tick control is the best method to keep your pet free of these nasty parasites, which can carry serious diseases. Encina Veterinary Hospital offers a varied supply of products to prevent heartworm and kill fleas/ticks in the environment.
One of the most overlooked parts of pet health care is dental care. Dental care is a significant part of your pets’ health. Our staff can demonstrate the correct technique for brushing your pets teeth (you can always refer to our YouTube videos too) – be sure to ask for a sample toothbrush and toothpaste at your next visit!
